STAFF REPORT - CITY COUNCIL/SUCCESSOR AGENCY/PUBLIC FINANCE AUTHORITY

Subject:Authorize Purchase of a new Dump Truck for Public Works
Meeting Date:Thursday, March 16, 2023
From:Marissa Trejo, City Manager
Prepared by:Sean Brewer, Assistant City Manager

I.    RECOMMENDATION:

Staff is requesting Council's authorization to purchase a new dump truck for the Public Works Department in the amount not to exceed $125,000.

II.    BACKGROUND:

The City of Coalinga Public Works Department currently has two dump trucks where one is not in operation. The oldest truck is a 1988 Ford Dump truck which is in inoperable condition at this time. It needs new tires, a new carburetor, leaks fuel, has a bad battery, and wont pass smog. This vehicle is well past its useful life to be apart of the public work fleet.

The other dump truck that we still use is a 2004 Ford 650 which will plan to stay in operation.

Staff has been calling several dealers who may have dump trucks and after several contacts, the Public Work Supervisor was able to locate a dump truck in Salinas who has a god inventory and available for sale. Due to ongoing supply issues staff recommends moving on this purchase asap.

III.   DISCUSSION:

With the recent purchase of the small paving machine Public Works is not only in need of an additional dump truck to preform paving jobs, but they are in need of a reliable truck when there are events such as water, sewer and gas leaks to move material to the sites.

The truck that is being proposed to be purchased in a 2023 Ford F-650 6.7 Diesel 5/7yd Dump Truck, Power Group, Keyless Entry, 5/7yd Enoven Beau-Roc Dump Body, PTO Driven Hoist, 36" Under Box, Pintal & STD Hitch, And Tarp.

Staff has attached the proposal, invoice and pictures of the truck.

IV.   ALTERNATIVES:

  • Do not authorize staff to purchase a new dump truck.

V.    FISCAL IMPACT:

The invoice cost for the dump truck is $119,384.15 and is a budgeted item for FY23. Funds will come from the major machinery and equipment account of the water, sewer and gas enterprise funds. There will be some additional outfitting equipment and badging that the truck will need which is the reason for the 125,000.00 total request.
