I.    RECOMMENDATION:

Provide direction to staff regarding the design, scope, and installation of commemorative flags and/or banners recognizing the 250th anniversary of the United States.

II.    BACKGROUND:

At the request of Mayor Pro-Tem Schindler, staff is bringing forward this item for future Council consideration regarding the installation of flags and/or banners in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the United States (America250). The anniversary commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776 and will be observed nationally in 2026.

The proposed banners would serve as a visible civic recognition of this historic milestone and may be displayed in public rights-of-way, City facilities, or other appropriate locations, consistent with City standards and policies.

III.   DISCUSSION:

If the Council wishes to proceed, staff will proceed with:

  • Banner themes and design

  • Identify the the locations and quantities

  • Duration of display

  • Coordination with any regional or national America250 initiatives

Council direction at this time will allow staff to proceed with design development and procurement consistent with budgeted funds.

IV.   ALTERNATIVES:

None - Just need direction from Council.

V.    FISCAL IMPACT:

Funding in the amount of $5,000 has been identified and is already budgeted in the FY 2025–26 One-Time Projects List for banners. No additional appropriations are required at this time. If the council would like for these to be the first of the banners designed and order we can proceed. Other thoughts on banners as part of this effort were related to seasons, events, ect.
