II.    BACKGROUND:

At the request of Councilmember Lowder, this item has been agendized for general discussion to allow the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) to present an overview of its organization and its interest in potentially hosting motorsports events at the Coalinga Municipal Airport.

SCCA is a national motorsports organization founded in 1944 with over 65,000 members nationwide. Through its regional chapters, SCCA conducts sanctioned autocross (“SOLO”) and rallycross events across the country at a variety of sites, including parking areas, airfields, and other large open facilities.

The Fresno SCCA Chapter, which has operated in the Central Valley for more than 30 years, will provide the presentation.

III.   DISCUSSION:

During the presentation, SCCA representatives will provide a general overview of:

  • The nature and format of autocross and rallycross events;

  • How events are typically conducted at airport and similar facilities;

  • Potential community and economic benefits associated with hosting regional events.

This item is intended to be informational with possible direction from the Council for staff to further explore the opportunity at the Airport.
