STAFF REPORT - CITY COUNCIL/SUCCESSOR AGENCY/PUBLIC FINANCE AUTHORITY

Subject:Discussion, Direction and Potential Action regarding City Council Pay Increase
Meeting Date:Thursday, March 17, 2022
From:Marissa Trejo, City Manager
Prepared by:Marissa Trejo, City Manager

I.    RECOMMENDATION:

This item was requested as a Future Agenda Item by Councilman Adkisson.

II.    BACKGROUND:

Pay for Councilmembers is governed by Government Code section 36516 which breaks down the pay by population.

The City of Coalinga falls under section (2)(A) which sets the limit of pay to three hundred dollars ($300) per month.  However, there is an option to increase the limit above the $300 per month  by passing an ordinance.

III.   DISCUSSION:

It is permissible for the City Council to pass an ordinance that increases the pay by no more than five percent (5%) which could essentially increase City Council pay from $300 per month to $315 per month.

IV.   ALTERNATIVES:

This is a discussion item.  Council may direct the City Manager to bring back an Ordinance to increase City Council pay by 5% or choose not to do so.

V.    FISCAL IMPACT:

There is no fiscal impact associated with directing the City Manager to bring back an ordinance.  If that ordinance is approved, the fiscal impact would be approximately $900 from the City's General Fund and is currently unbudgeted.
