STAFF REPORT - CITY COUNCIL/SUCCESSOR AGENCY/PUBLIC FINANCE AUTHORITY

Subject:Approve Color Scheme for Porous Pave Tree Surrounds for the Elm Ave Improvement Project in Front of the Fire Department
Meeting Date:March 17, 2022
From:Marissa Trejo, City Manager
Prepared by:Sean Brewer, Assistant City Manager

I.    RECOMMENDATION:

Council Approval of a Red and Black (alternating tree wells) Color Scheme for the Porous Pave Tree Surrounds related to the Elm Ave Improvement Project in Front of the Fire Department.

II.    BACKGROUND:

The Fire Department frontage Elm Ave Improvement project is currently out to bid, which includes demolition of the existing trees, sidewalk and curb and gutter, with the install of 7-24 inch box trees, new sidewalk, curb and gutter, and lighting conduit.

On the 7th Street project the City Council authorized the use of Porous Pave Tree Surrounds in the tree wells and staff has proposed this material for this project as well. Since there are a multitude of color options for this material, staff thought it would be a good idea to use black and red as the colors for the tree surrounds.

III.   DISCUSSION:

Attached is information on Porous Pave Tree Surrounds as well as a color options exhibit. Staff is recommending using the redwood and black standard color pattern on every other tree well in front of the fire Department on Elm Ave.

IV.   ALTERNATIVES:

  • Another option would be to use the Redwood-Black custom color where the red/black is combined in one tree well and all tree wells would be the same color. - see color option attachment.
  • Use an alternative color available - The Seventh Street project used brown.

V.    FISCAL IMPACT:

The cost of the porous pave material has already been included in the bid, staff just needs to confirm the color.
