Meeting Date:April 25, 2019
From:Marissa Trejo, City Manager
Prepared by:Darren Blevins, (I) Chief of Police

I.    RECOMMENDATION:

Staff requests Councils approval to accept the grant funding awarded to the Coalinga Police Department from the National Police Dog Foundation for the purposes of establishing a Police K-9 program.

II.    BACKGROUND:

On August 8, 2018, the former police chief, received approval from the council to apply for a grant through the National  Police Dog Foundation to assist in funding a K-9 program for the police department.

III.   DISCUSSION:

The National Police Dog Foundation is a group that raises money nationwide to assist police departments by giving grants to fund police k-9 units. Grant monies can be given to departments for k-9 purchases or k-9 training programs. The Department applied for a k-9 grant not to exceed the amount of  $15,000.

On April 9, 2019, the National Police Dog Foundation held their quarterly meeting and awarded the Coalinga Police Department $2,500.00 to go towards the purchase or training of the officer and police dog.

I am requesting the Council authorize the police department to accept these funds which would be placed in an account provided by the finance Department.  These funds would be used to help fund the K-9 program.

IV.   ALTERNATIVES:

Do not allow the police department to accept the grant funds.

V.    FISCAL IMPACT:

An additional revenue of $2,500.00 would be added to budget to be used for the restart of the police department's k9 program.
